A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Chief Chidiebere J. Okoh, has cautioned youths from Umunna against what he described as attempts to undermine the political standing and developmental achievements of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.
Reacting to a recent protest staged by some youths in Umunna community, Chief Okoh alleged that the demonstration was sponsored and politically motivated, urging the youths to desist from allowing themselves to be used to advance interests that, according to him, do not align with the long-term progress of the area.
The APC stalwart maintained that individuals allegedly inducing the youths to embark on protests against the Deputy Speaker do not have the genuine welfare of the people at heart, warning that such actions could prove counterproductive to the aspirations of the community.
Chief Okoh, while calling for objectivity and sober reflection, stressed that leadership should be assessed based on capacity, performance, and proven ability to deliver democratic dividends rather than on sentiments or temporary inducements.
According to him, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has distinguished himself as a tested legislator with a track record of effective representation and impactful projects across Bende Federal Constituency.
“Emotions aside, and based on who is doing what is right with the capacity to deliver, Benjamin Kalu remains the best option. He has demonstrated competence and commitment to the people, and if given another opportunity, he will surpass expectations,” Chief Okoh stated.
He expressed concern that some youths could be swayed by immediate financial gains to participate in activities capable of disrupting what he described as a reliable and progressive leadership process.
Chief Okoh further said that some of those supporting the protest were individuals associated with past administrations whom he accused of contributing to years of underdevelopment in Abia State, insisting that such forces would not succeed in reversing the progress currently being recorded.
Highlighting the Deputy Speaker’s developmental interventions, the APC chieftain pointed to ongoing projects, including the construction of a market in Item and a hospital project in Igbere, alongside other constituency initiatives which, he said, have positively impacted communities across Bende Federal Constituency.
He maintained that the people of Bende are aware of the achievements of their representative and would continue to support leaders who have demonstrated commitment to service delivery.
Chief Okoh reaffirmed his confidence in the Deputy Speaker, declaring that the people would remain steadfast in their support for Benjamin Kalu in future political engagements, citing his performance and contributions to the development of Bende Federal Constituency.
The comments come amid growing political activities and alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders across Abia State continuing to evaluate leaders based on performance, accessibility, and developmental impact.
