It is unfortunate and deeply ironic that China, a nation whose activities have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s current challenges, would turn around and commend the country for its efforts in governance and development. Such praise, while seemingly diplomatic, conceals a darker reality—one that Nigerians must confront with courage and honesty.
In many regions of Nigeria, particularly those rich in minerals, Chinese interests have entrenched themselves under the guise of “foreign investment.” However, what we are witnessing is far from genuine investment; it is exploitation. China’s involvement in illegal mining activities across states such as Zamfara, Niger, Nasarawa, and others has become a national security concern. These illegal operations are not only draining Nigeria’s mineral wealth but are also funding and arming non-state actors to protect their illicit interests.
These so-called “investors” have allegedly supplied weapons and logistical support to local militias, ensuring that anyone who dares to challenge their control is silenced. This growing network of armed groups has deepened insecurity, created economic instability, and caused immense suffering for innocent Nigerians. Yet, the blame continues to fall on the government, even though the root cause is well known.
It is distressing that despite intelligence reports and public outcry, the Nigerian government has largely remained silent on this matter. Our leaders must rise above foreign influence and defend the nation’s sovereignty. Allowing foreign powers to exploit our land and weaponise our people against the state is not just negligence; it is betrayal.
China’s commendations are hollow. They come from the same hand that continues to drain our resources, destabilise our communities, and undermine our national security. What Nigeria needs today is not empty praise, but decisive action to reclaim our mines, disarm these foreign-sponsored militias, and restore integrity to our economy.
If we do not act now, our silence will lead to our undoing. The Nigerian people deserve transparency, justice, and protection from both internal and external threats. We must not allow any foreign power — no matter how influential — to destroy our future in exchange for short-term gain.
