Democracy thrives where transparency, fairness, and accountability are protected. It weakens when citizens are denied the opportunity to freely participate in processes meant to reflect their collective will. This concern has now taken centre stage in Umunneochi, Abia North Senatorial Zone following widespread complaints and protests surrounding the conduct of the NDC primary election reportedly assigned to Mr. Ikechukwu Chikadibe Moses with contact number (07033024249) as returning officer.

According to complaints from party members and stakeholders, many individuals reportedly arrived at the designated venue prepared to participate in what they expected to be a transparent and credible democratic exercise. However, concerns later emerged alleging that election materials did not arrive at the venue as expected and that the exercise failed to hold there, triggering frustration, disappointment, and protest among members who had gathered to vote.

These allegations raise troubling questions that deserve urgent clarification and accountability:

  • Why did the election reportedly fail to hold at the designated venue?
  • What explanation exists regarding the alleged absence of election materials at the location where party members assembled?
  • Why were party faithful, who reportedly turned out in expectation of exercising their democratic rights, left without answers?
  • What immediate steps will party leadership take to restore confidence in the process?

These are not insignificant concerns. Internal democracy remains the backbone of every credible political institution. When members lose confidence in electoral processes within a party, public trust in democratic systems suffers.

Democracy advocates, civil society groups, and human rights activists should peacefully and lawfully call Ikechukwu on 07033024249 to demand transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding the Umunneochi exercise. Calls for accountability are not acts of hostility; they are necessary democratic safeguards that help protect institutions from distrust, impunity, and confusion.

Nigeria’s democratic history reminds citizens of the dangers of weakened institutions and compromised electoral confidence. The painful lessons surrounding the annulment of the June 12 election involving late democracy figure M.K.O. Abiola remains part of the nation’s political memory and continues to underscore the importance of defending credible democratic processes and resisting any perception of disenfranchisement.

No democratic society advances when citizens feel excluded from participation or when unanswered questions overshadow electoral exercises. Accountability, openness, and fairness are not optional values; they are democratic obligations.

The NDC leadership should urgently address the concerns raised by party members, conduct a transparent review of the events surrounding the Isuochi primary, communicate clearly with stakeholders, and take appropriate action where necessary. Party faithful deserve clarity. Aspirants deserve fairness. Voters deserve respect.

The people of Isuochi must remain peaceful, law-abiding, and steadfast in demanding democratic accountability through legitimate channels. Democracy should never be weakened by silence, uncertainty, or avoidable controversy. Posterity will remember not only what happened, but also who stood up to defend fairness, transparency, and the democratic rights of the people.
