The creation of an additional state from the South East geo-political zone is long overdue, according to Chief Emeka Charles Kalu, a seasoned politician and aspirant to the Abia North senatorial seat. Reacting to the National Assembly Joint Committee’s recommendations on constitutional review, Kalu commended the efforts of those working tirelessly to ensure the realization of this vision.

In an exclusive interview with Sunday Independent, Kalu highlighted the historical marginalization of the South East region, citing denial of balance of power, unequal revenue allocation, and inadequate representation in the federal parliament. He emphasized that creating a new state would address these inequalities and give the people a sense of belonging in national governance.

Kalu noted that the planned state creation would help resolve insecurity and other forms of agitation in the region, promoting equality and democracy. He also referenced the prolonged detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, which has sparked nationwide protests, and emphasized the need for equitable distribution of national resources.

By creating a new state, Kalu believes the region would finally get the recognition it deserves, and the people would feel more included in the country’s governance.
